Stimulants (e.g. ritalin), while usually quite safe, may cause an underlying tic disorder to show up.

I am a Child and Adult Psychiatrist and have many patients with various
forms of ADHD (ADD). Stimulants (e.g. ritalin), while usually quite safe,
may cause an underlying tic disorder to show up. The other types of
medications, including bupropion (Wellbutrin), do not seem to do this.

While everyone reacts to medications in a unique way, I doubt that
Wellbutrin had anything to do with your son's tics.
Dosage varies both with age and size (body weight). For adults the
typical dosage would be 100-150mg tid (i.e. 300-450mg per day). Since
overdosage can cause seizures, the lowest EFFECTIVE dose is best.

I've seen good results using Wellbutrin for ADHD/ADD with and without any
depression.

FYI, another good class of medications would be the tricyclic
antidepressants, e.g. nortriptyline, imipramine, etc.

Best wishes,
Celeste
