My brother is the same way. He is 16 now and we had the same problem that you had.
He went to a catholic school up to the 8th grade and now he is in HighSchool. The school pretty much pushed him
through school from one grade to the next until he finally graduated. We had him tested when he was in 4th, 5th and 7th grade.
He is in 10th grade in a public highschool and he still can't read. He has the reading ability of
a twelve year old. He write's like he is ten and he doesn't even know how to cursive write. I tried to help him all my life.
We had him tested a number of times by doctors and social workers, he was on medication, and he is being tutored both
professionally and by my whole family. I myself don't know what to do anymore. But I do know the first step is to get him tested,
inform the school of your concerns and also inform your town. There is funding for this and the school and the town are obligated to
help.
My brother's problem is not only a learning disability but it is also emotional. He has low self esteem and no matter how much help
we get him, he has to be the one to make the step. So far he only makes a couple of baby steps forward and then back again.
This is never ending.
