I have a grandson Edward with Downs Syndrome who will be 5 next November and my daughter was asking the same questions: How will he cope with main stream education with one to one help or should he go to a special school.I believe Special Needs staff usually have had the training to cope with Downs Syndrome children and so my daughter finally has decided it better to let him try this method. She feared if he went to a special school he will copy habits/tics of other special needs children with a different diagnosis as he does mimic. At first I had my doubts, he understands what we say to him but he utters very few sounds and Edward only signs when he thinks he will. I realised how much progress he has made since attending nursery school. So we hope this will continue if he is accepted in main stream school. We shall be both be interested to know how your little boy copes and just think, as long as he is happy and you feel as though you have done your best for him that is really all that matters at the end of the day.
